Need a tool to sketch your CNC router? Sketchup is the answer

So, you have decided to take things in your own hands and build a machine that will be only yours to name. First of all – great choice! The decision to build something by yourself is not only exciting but also cheaper and challenging, but in a good way. You will learn so much along the way, make mistakes and (re)calculations… but end up having something that you designed and built. And that my friends, is something no money can buy.

But in order to get there, you must start from somewhere. From a place that can get your ideas delivered from that ingenious brain of yours to a computer model. I have to say I’m no expert in this matter, but Google’s Sketchup has proven to be the best tool for me so far.

First of all, it is really easy to use and free. To learn more, you can follow their blog for updates and tips & tricks of the trade.

But what is also awesome about this is that you can use the power of community. There is an option to publish your sketches to a 3D warehouse where you can contribute your sketches for others to enjoy, or you can just download sketches of parts or even finished machine models. This can speed up your sketching process quite a bit. Speaking of, you can find my modest contribution here.

Do you have any other preferred tools for this? I would love to hear them in comments.
